3 stories

The Greenwood Girls
by Megan

Chapter 1: The Irony

Lily, oh Lily, lost her first tooth. Based on her past (click here if you don't remember), we thought it would be a joyous event.

Oh how wrong we were.

This is how it went...

Lily: (while sobbing and screaming) DON'T touch it!
Mom: OK
Lily: (while still sobbing and screaming) DON'T look at it!
Mom: OK
Lily: (still, 10 minutes later, sobbing and screaming) GET AWAY FROM ME!
Mom: You're not going to Lagoon until we get that tooth out. I'm not spending another day like this. (this is me being firm)
Lily: It will HURT! (mind you, she's still sobbing but the screaming has gone down just a touch)
Mom: No it won't.
OK, maybe just a little.
Lily: (mustering ever ounce of courage that a 5 year old drama queen has)
OK.

and....ta-dum!Mom: Did that hurt?
Lily: No.

Oh, Lily.

Chapter 2: Undie Jumping

We love Lake Tahoe. It is my favorite place in the whole entire world. Really.
I have passed that on to my kids. This year, after a fabulous offer from my brother, we spent a week basking in the glory.
And, we discovered something.

Sophie is a total stud.

Rock jumping. No problem
Cliff jumping. No problem
Mountain climbing. No problem
Putting large groups of teenage boys (and her mother) to shame because they are too chicken for all of the above.

No problem

(Sophie and Geoff jumping off a dock on a break from a bike ride, and, yes, she's in her undies)

I love this kid.

Chapter 3: The Talk

Emma

It's hard for me to explain how much I love this girl. She is strong, sensitive, smarter than me, kind, compassionate, brave, and beautiful.

And 9.

And that means...time for THE talk.

After much delay, Wade and I gathered our courage, took her out for a night together, and had THE talk.
She was wonderful. She led us through the whole thing. She asked great questions.
At one point (and by that I mean the point of the big reveal) she said,

"OH! NOW I get it!"

When it was all said and done, she looked at me and said,

"Well, I'm really glad we had this talk. I've been wondering about all this stuff for a while and I've just kind of been waiting for you guys to be ready to talk about it."

She puts me to shame.

The end.

Real Salt Lake

So the Pioneer day weekend was an adventurous one for the Greenwoods, three straight days of parties capped off by a fabulous soccer game at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday night.

We sat right in front of the Chivas USA “fan club”. I highly recommend that spot to fully appreciate MLS in all its glory (I really need to get a Lucha Libre outfit).

Living under the influence of sleep deprivation, sugar and confetti, Lily was not in the best frame of mind for the post-game fireworks... especially when she saw that I brought foam earplugs for her instead of the wax ones that she likes!

Environmentally Concious

We pride ourselves in being an environmentally concious family. We turn the lights off. We only have one car. We conserve water. And, yes, we recycle.

We were doing a little ladies grooming the other night: clipping, filing, painting and so on.
In order to prevent clipped nails from scattering all over the carpet (discovering clipped nails on the floor grosses me out... I get it from my dad), I had collected the nail clippings in a little pile on my leg.

Little helpful Lily quickly brushed them into her hand, held them proudly, and said,
"Mom, I'll throw these away."

"Garbage or recycle?"

Totally awesome.

The Truth Hurts

Yesterday was hot.

So, Sophie, Lily, and I went to Bop and Suzie's for a little wading pool time with cousin Katie. Emma, in all her 9-year old coolness, was with a friend at another pool.

Now, you have never seen two bodies that look better in swimming suits than Lily and Sophie.
Lily looks like a bronzed 5-year old body builder.
And, Sophie, oh Sophie. Let's just say that even at 7, Sophie was meant to be in a swimming suit. She has this beautiful, long, lean, sun-kissed bod.
Admiring their georgeousness led us to this conversation...

Me: Lily, have I ever told you how much I love your butt.
Lily: Yes.
Me: You have the cutest butt.

Me: Sophie, have I ever told you how much I love your butt.
You have the cutest butt.
Sophie: Mom, have I ever told you that you have the cutest...
(lots of thought and sincere pondering)....

pony-tail.

Oh, the truth hurts.

Destroying my Children's Virtue

So, I had a wedding shower yesterday. A cute family shower for a cousin's bride-to-be.
The theme was "Firsts". Darling idea.
My gift assignment was "First Game Night".
Now, I don't know about you, but there was only one thing that came to mind.

Strip Poker.

Seriously, what other game are you going to play your first year of marriage. It was a perfect fit. All I needed:
1. a set of cards
2. lingerie
My obstable:
shopping for said items with three young children in tow.

I attempted it anyways. Here is how it went...

(We enter the lingerie section)
Emma: Mom, what ARE these?
Me: They're nightgowns.
Emma: NO THEY'RE NOT! They are WAY to short for night gowns! They are like grown-up nightgowns but in my size!
Sophie: Mom, these are not modest.
Emma: Why are you buying these, Mom.
Sophie: Mom, these are not modest.
Me: I'm buying it for a wedding shower gift.
Emma: But, Mom. These are too short. They are not nightgowns. They won't fit.
Sophie: Mom, these are not modest.
Me: I promise, it's ok.
Emma: I don't think they'll fit. I've never seen nightgowns like these.
Sophie: Mom, these are not modest.
Me: GIRLS! When you get married, sometimes you get special nightgowns. They are special just-getting-married nightgowns.

Seriously, I said "special just-getting-married" nightgowns.

Lily: (A few feet away, slowly stroking a silky, chiffony, very skimpy "nightgown")
Mom, I like THIS one!

Nice parenting skill, meg.

Oh, honestly!

I have to be honest.
My kids are cute.
Really cute.
And they crack me up. All the time.

Here is a little bit of sunshine.
Thanks to our favorite photographer, Laura.
This is her website if you want her to work a little bit of magic on you.

Born to be toothless

Sophie is sporting a new checkerboard smile.
She was meant to be toothless.
Oh, how we love this kid.

Emma and I are bored...

It's Friday.
Sophie is at a buddy's house.
Lily is too.
Emma and I are trying to watch basketball, but, we are bored.

I think that being bored with Emma is my new favorite thing to do.

Unfortunately, the feeling is not mutual.
